Historical Major Cases
Noida is known for two of the most complex criminal investigations in Indian history:
1. The Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj Double Murder (2008)
This case remains one of India’s biggest unsolved mysteries.
The Incident: Thirteen-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found dead with her throat slit in her bedroom in Sector 25. Initially, the domestic help, Hemraj, was considered the main suspect until his decomposed body was found on the terrace a day later.
The Investigation: The case took many turns. The Noida police initially blamed the parents, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar. Then the CBI took over and suspected other domestic helps before eventually charging the parents again.
Current Status: The parents were convicted in 2013 but acquitted by the Allahabad High Court in 2017 due to a lack of evidence. No one has been held legally responsible for the murders to date.
2. The Nithari Serial Murders (2006) This case horrified the nation with reports of kidnapping, sexual abuse, and cannibalism.
The Discovery: Skeletal remains of several children and young women were found in a drain behind a house in Sector 31.
The Accused: Businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help, Surinder Koli.
The Outcome: Koli was convicted in multiple cases and sentenced to death. However, in a significant legal turn, the Allahabad High Court acquitted both Pandher and Koli in 2023, citing the failure of the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. In November 2025, the Supreme Court upheld the acquittal of Surinder Koli, leading to his release.
