ELECTION UPDATE :The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar appeared to be headed towards a thumping victory and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar seemed prepared to secure a fifth consecutive term, as latest trends showed the alliance leading in 202 of the 243 seats in the state.

Kumar is the state’s longest-serving chief minister. Rastriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejaswi Yadav won by over 11,000 votes in Raghopur.At 5.30pm, the trends showed the NDA had surpassed its 2020 results, when it secured 122 seats. The Mahagathbandhan, on the other hand, was leading in 33 seats while Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj party failed to open an account.

The election in India’s third-most populous state, with 74 million registered voters across 243 assembly constituencies, has been viewed as a key test of Modi’s popularity, especially among Gen Z: Bihar is India’s youngest state.

Key details:

• BJP has won 48 seats, while JD(U) has won 29 seats.

• The BJP leads in 43 seats, JD(U) in 54, and LJP (Ram Vilas) in 15seats.

• The RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, is ahead in 19 seats winning in 6 only, while the Congress has 1 only.

• Poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party has failed to make any impact, while AIMIM has emerged as a surprise, leading in 6 seats, fueled by Muslim votes from Seemanchal.

 What does Congress’ reaction to the Bihar loss reveal about its shortcoming in election?

As the results of the latest round of assembly polls in Bihar, which indicated NDA’s landslide victory, started pouring in, the reaction of the Congress national spokesperson, Pawan Khera, was symptomatic of the crisis the party is facing.

Addressing the media, Khera said that the imprint of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Gupta is writ large over the results. Khera’s remarks reaffirmed that Congress continues to be in a denial mode, refusing to read the real problems. Its leadership has consistently let the workers down with their reluctance to lead from the front. In Bihar, its woes were compounded by the fact that it did not have any organisational structure or mass base.

The Bihar results point toward the persistent decline of the Congress in the state. In the 2020 assembly polls, as part of the Mahagathbandhan, Congress had fielded candidates in 70 constituencies. It eventually won 19, polling a mere 9.6 per cent votes. It was blamed for overstating its social and geographical reach, to secure a disproportionate number of constituencies as part of the seat-sharing deal, and pulling the opposition alliance down.
